Idris Khan - Beyond the Black
With my studio we visited Victoria Miro Gallery to see Idris Khan's exhibition.
Made up of layer upon layer of words, the shapes draw you in but their meaning is obscured. Only around the edges is anything legible and even then only as a series of fragments. The words are the artist’s reactions to Friedrich Nietzsche’s ‘The Birth of Tragedy’.
I was influenced by Khans's paintings and tried to create a collage of my own by cutting out the most important parts for me from the pictures I took in Greenwich in order to create a new fantastic "space" and by exploring different colours, textures and tempos. I made 3 other versions of it on photoshop and changed the effects to give it a sense of darkness. In the last one I put the map of the area on top of it to show that each of the cut outs that create the space come from all these places.
